Optical Coherence Tomography

Eyecare Eyewear is proud to offer Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanning in all three practices Warwick, Chinchilla and Dalby. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an essential tool for non-invasive analysis of retinal tissue in the diagnosis and management of macula, glaucoma and anterior segment pathology. It has become an indispensable tool in the early detection of structural abnormalities for the various ocular conditions. Moreover, it allows ongoing precise progression analysis of the anatomical changes.

Ocular Photography

The Eyecare Eyewear optometry team has developed skill and expertise with the use of our photographic testing equipment. This includes both an anterior and posterior eye photography system and data storage and retrieval system. The benefits of this equipment  include the ability for patients to see problems previously only described by optometrists and accurate documentation of ocular findings.

Visual Efficiency Assessments

If you experience tired sore eyes, blurred vision or headaches when working at near and on the computer you may be feeling the effects of visual stress.  The Eyecare Eyewear optometrists are specifically trained to assess the performance of your vision during sustained near visual tasks.  Through the use of carefully selected stress-relieving and preventative lenses and/or vision therapy, you can enjoy relief from even the most stressful close-up visual conditions.

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy helps people of all ages improve their visual skills and/or visual processing problems.  Examples of visual skills that may be remediated include tracking, focusing, binocularity/eye teaming, attention, visual memory and discrimination.  Vision therapy usually requires once a week office visits where the patient works with the optometrist or vision therapist on the required activities.  There are also activities provided to practice at home for between 15-25 minutes, 5 times per week.

Vision Information Processing Assessments

A vision information processing assessment is designed to determine how well a child understands what he/she is looking at.  These skills are vital for learning and if not well developed may lead to learning difficulties.  The skills that are assessed include:

  • Visual spatial skills – self awareness, right and left knowledge, direction concepts
  • Visual analysis – the ability to analyse visual information and identify similarities or differences
  • Visual motor integration – the ability to plan movement in response to visual stimulus
  • Visual memory – retaining and recalling visually presented information
  • Visual auditory analysis – correlating visual with auditory stimuli
  • Visual sequential analysis – pattern recognition and recall information in the correct order
  • Visualisation – the ability to create a mental picture of patterns, words or ideas.  The results identify the specific visual skill deficiencies of the child so that an appropriate vision therapy program may be designed.

Therapeutic Management of Eye Disease

The last decade has seen many advances in the profession of optometry in Australia. One of the most significant has been the therapeutic management of eye disease. The Eyecare Eyewear Optometry team has the ability to organise therapeutic prescriptions of eye drops for a range of conditions such as:

  • Glaucoma (Ophthalmologic co-management)
  • Bacterial eye infections (conjunctivitis)
  • Viral infections
  • Ocular allergies
  • The optometry team is also happy to offer advice on general nutrition and how this influences ocular health.

Ophthalmologic and Tertiary Services Referrals

We are lucky enough to have a few ophthalmologic colleagues that we call our friends. As such we can guarantee that if you need to see an ophthalmologist urgently this can be organized. In addition, the Eyecare Eyewear team regularly refers patients for other tertiary ophthalmic services such as surgery for cataracts, glaucoma and retinal disease.

Post Operative Aftercare

The trusting relationship that we have with our ophthalmologic colleagues extends to assisting with post operative aftercares. For those patients who are unable to stay in Toowoomba or Brisbane after recent surgery, the Eyecare Eyewear team is there to deliver post operative assessment and advice on prescribed medications.

Corneal Topography

Challenging contact lens fits and orthokeratology are near impossible without the use of the Eyecare Eyewear corneal topographer.  Corneal topography is an imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea (front surface of the eye).  This three-dimensional map can assist in the diagnosis of a number of eye conditions, and is an invaluable tool for assessing the fit of contact lenses.

Out of Office Optometry Consultations

As part of a full scope family optometry practice we are happy to travel to consult with patients who are less mobile. The Eyecare Eyewear Optometry team currently provides such services at our local nursing homes. If you are unable to access our practice locations for what ever reason, please do not hesitate to call to discuss our domiciliary testing service.

Vision Assessments for Queensland Transport

The Eyecare Eyewear optometry team can assess your vision to determine whether or not you meet the standards for your chosen class of driver’s licence.  These standards are set out in the national medical standards (Commercial and Private Vehicle Drivers -Assessing Fitness to Drive 2003 (AFTD) and include primarily visual acuity and peripheral vision limits.

Custom Contact Lens Fittings – Keratoconus and Astigmatism

With the help of the latest technology in corneal mapping, the Eyecare Eyewear optometry team can create a custom contact lens to fit almost all prescriptions.  Keratoconus is a condition that causes thinning of the cornea (front surface of the eye) resulting in a cone-like shape instead of the normally round shape of the cornea.  As the condition progresses, vision becomes more distorted and cannot be improved with spectacles alone.  In most cases a rigid gas permeable lens can be custom designed to provide optimal vision correction.

Astigmatism is a common condition where the optical power of the eye varies depending on the angle of light passing through it resulting in blurred vision at all distances.  It is usually due to the cornea (front surface of the eye) being irregular in shape.  The contact lens options for astigmatism can include soft and rigid contact lenses.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) or Corneal Refractive Therapy involves the gentle re-shaping of the cornea (front surface of the eye) overnight by a rigid contact lens to produce clear vision once removed.  The process is completely reversible; therefore the retainer lens is required to be worn several times a week overnight to maintain clear vision throughout the day.  Eyecare Eyewear has the latest technology, equipment and expertise to enable the design and monitoring of custom ortho-k lenses.   Orthokeratology is currently most suitable for mild to moderate myopic (shortsighted) and mild hyperopic (longsighted) prescriptions. However, there are currently clinical trials of the use of this modality of vision correction for more complicated refractive corrections. New research has recently revealed the benefits of orthokeratology with the reduction of myopic progression in children.

Automated Perimetry

Peripheral vision is of vital importance in assisting the visual system to accurately locate and centre visual attention. Losses in peripheral vision can occur due to disease processes such as glaucoma, diabetes and stroke. Eyecare Eyewear is equipped with automated perimeters that are highly effective at detecting and monitoring visual field losses.

Coloured Filter Overlays

Our optometry team is also experience with coloured filter overlay trials designed to reduce pattern glare which can affect reading performance. Prescription lenses can subsequently be tinted to the desired colour or we can provide a colour overlay for reading tasks.
